These dining spots are putting a spin on old favorites

Whether it’s a change of scenery or a menu rehaul, these restaurants are shaking things up

Beeffalo by HotRocks

You may have heard of HotRocks, a food destination that opened way back in 2004, which they followed up with a beloved Marikina restaurant, Beeffalo by Hotrocks. Well, Louie Abad and his family are bringing their grilled fare to San Juan. In this new Beeffalo by Hotrocks, they stay true to their roots and create a place where families and friends can enjoy comfort food like ribs, buttermilk fried chick, or even liempo. With her cooking prowess, matriarch and executive chef Girlie Cosio-Abad goes for simple but deeply satisfying fare and wants to leave feeling full and happy. Pro tip: check out their amazing Brazo de Mercedes which is great for an extended kuwentuhan session.

Flatiron 1771

Young BGC urbanites used to flock this restaurant for some of their good ‘ole Tostado Wings Adobo, a nice cap to a hard day at work. But today, Flatiron 1771 is all about reinventing themselves into a modern diner, and will soon release a slew of new dishes that will define this change: crisp-friend Bravo Potato Skins with pulled beef brisket, cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, and spring onions; succulent Pressed Pork Belly that is grilled and doused with buffalo sauce; and even rich milkshakes to go along their crowd-pleasing dessert dish, Intense Brownie Burger.

Rackshack

Rackshack’s founder Chukri Prieto believes that “barbecue should have no boundaries.” The family that introduced Racks to the local marketing wants you to meet its “cooler, younger brother,” along with five crazy sauces to choose from. “There is something for everyone and every taste imaginable–whether that’s mild and sweet, a little on the tangy side, Asian-inspired, or spicy,” Prieto says. You can also come for new dishes like their Street Corn Salad, Carnitas Plate, Harajuku Potato Salad, Creole Garlic Shrimp, and classic Fish and Chips. And here you can have some fun with your food: you can play at the Treat or Dare dart board, Rackshack-style beer pong, Foosball, and other board games.
