Road Test: Fitbit Ionic

The fitness brand’s newest model allows you to be always online.

If my fitness tracker were a person, we’d be going steady for more than two years now. Check that. By now, we would have eloped to some coastal town, where we spend our days walking and climbing everywhere. Our life would be both contemporary and idyllic, filled with quiet 4 A.M. runs, a 9-hour sleep cycle, and, I don’t know, let’s just say chickens.

But I’ve digressed. My point is, I’ve come to love my Fitbit ever since I was gifted with one. I’ve always loved walking, but my little black band has given me structure to my manic desire to go on foot. How manic? My personal record is 43,000 steps, while I average about 26,000 a day. I’ve once been accused of secretly being a messenger. (True story.)

Recently, I was given the opportunity to give the new Fitbit Ionic a spin. The highly-anticipated model is a smartwatch, and was launched together with the brand’s Flyer and Aria 2 lines. It has a significantly bigger face than my old tracker, the Charge 2. You can swipe left and right up and down to find apps, including music (300 songs and can sync with Pandora), wallet (which allows purchases to a reader), and alarm, which vibrates to help you wake up in the morning.

As for new fitness features, it has several. The Fitbit Coach gives you step-by-step instructions for a 7 minute workout right on your wrist. Its improved GPS powers Run Detect, which allows you to see real-time pace and distance. There’s Relaxation, which teaches you to take two-minute breathing breaks. With water resistance up to 50 meters, this model has a swim exercise mode, which counts the laps you’ve done and the calories you’ve burned.

My verdict? If you don’t mind a little bulkiness, you’d find a lot of nice surprises in the Fitbit Ionic. It’s great for people who love being connected.

THE FITBIT IONIC IS AVAILABLE AT DIGITAL WALKER, BEYOND THE BOX, IBOOK, TIMELINE, ABENSON, LAZADA, AND ZALORA AMONG OTHERS. FITBIT PHILIPPINES IS ON FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, AND TWITTER.
