Playlist: Our 2017

We end the year on a high note with six different playlists that represent the last 365 days.

Like with a lot of things that matter, your own take on how your year went is deeply personal, and, most of the time, uniquely enthralling. As 2017 draws to a close, your friendly NBHD team shares with you a slice of how their last 12 months went in our most favorite medium: awesome playlists.

Jacs Sampayan, Editor-in-chief
“I got into so many arguments this year. Whether they’re petty disagreements about where to eat, full-blown political debates on my Facebook wall, or expressions of my own irks and issues, this willingness to engage has been my default. It’s been somewhat liberating, but definitely exhausting. But there is another definition of “fight.” It is also a noun that implies strength, a feistiness that can get you through murky situations and depressing times. These songs will encourage you to figure out what’s what in this world, stop apologizing for leaving the haters behind, and have something to look forward to. Because, my friend, tomorrow can be awesome and there is still a lot of fight left in you.”

Alyssa Castillo, Editorial Assistant
“2017 was weird. The overwhelming highs and shocking lows opened up my eyes and gave me a glimpse of how the world worked. At 22, I’d ask, “was this just a case of #Adulting?” I couldn’t catch a break from constantly being bent and broken, but I’m nothing but grateful for all of it. No complaints. Picking myself up the ground, I dust myself off from this gritty year and, heck, I’m ecstatic just to be alive right now.”

Nana Caragay, Contributing Editor
“I started out the year obsessed with ‘I Feel It Coming’ by The Weeknd, so I listened to him a lot—together with my usual standbys (Manic Street Preachers, The xx, Muse) and a few new songs I discovered in spin class (Ariana andJessie J!). My 2017 soundtrack is a mix of filthy hip-hop (my guilty pleasure) and feel-good tunes, my only real requirement being that it’s got to get me going while I’m listening to it in the shower.”

Cindy Go, Beauty and Wellness Editor
“2017 was all about ending things on a high note.”

Renzo Navarro, In-house Photographer
“Behind every good idea that comes out of the shower is an amazing playlist, I promise! This playlist might be a curious mix of mellow and upbeat songs, but give it a chance. This year saw a spike in my bathroom dancing activity thanks to some of these tracks.”

Mags Ocampo, Art Director
“This year brought about a lot of big changes that left me feeling a little lost. Don’t get me wrong — the day-to-day was great but overall, I constantly felt like I was in between (of what? I don’t know for sure). These songs will take you from point A to B, but not without lingering in the in-between.”

See you all in 2018! Cheers!

Playlist: Bring It On

45 songs that can get you hyped and ready for anything on game day

There’s quite nothing like competition to get your primal instincts out. That desire to crush your “enemy” is innate, whether it’s an inter-office badminton tournament, tennis socials at the courts, or an important match-up between fierce rivals. (Speaking of which, holler if you’re watching Ateneo-La Salle on Sunday!)

A lot of athletes—from the pros to  have a pre-game ritual, and that usually includes music to set the mood. And that mood, that running dialogue is: Give up now because I’m about to tear you a new one. These tracks here—through empowering lyrics or heart-pumping beats—are a shot in the arm to get your game face on.

Playlist: Never Gonna Leave This Bed

Songs that fit just right for your lazy days

Picture this: sunlit sheets with the AC on max—the perfect setting for a lazy afternoon in. Unfortunately, slow days are hard to come by in a place as busy as Manila. Every day we’re forced to deal with horrendous traffic, skyrocketing expenses, and full schedules. So, when the rare opportunity to take it easy rolls around, you jump at it and spoil yourself silly. Set the tone for your own slowdown session with a pair of earphones and this playlist loaded with good vibes.

Playlist: Look what you made us do

Here are some angry anthems that actually deserve your attention.

After multiple in-office and online debates regarding Taylor Swift’s latest single—a flop in my opinion, sorry—we decided to put together a playlist of songs we like listening to when we’re mad. These songs showcase just the right mix of spite and sincerity without sacrificing beat and musicality.Sit back, slip your headphones on, and enjoy toying with your own feelings and being consumed by rage!
