Neo-soul and Grammy award winning hip-hop queen Erykah Badu is performing for the first time in Manila on October 14 at the Harbour Garden Tent, Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila as the last stop to her Badu VS. Everythang Tour 2017 A.D.
Twenty years since the release of her first album Baduizm, Filipino fans of the American singer-songwriter no longer have to wait as she is set to grace the stage with opening acts by formidable Filipino DJs including, Turntables & Rhythm, featuring DJ Shortkut and DJ Kristian Hernandez.
While she’s best known for the success of her debut album that paved the way for other neo-soul artists like, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell, Erykah Badu’s daring, eccentric and unapologetic character also manifests through her style. Many have looked up to her for making bold statements in fashion, particularly for representing her African roots with colorful, intricately patterned traditional robes and head wraps. Badu also embodies the values of authenticity and integrity; she is not afraid to have a voice while also providing a voice to the voiceless through the non-profit organization she founded in 1997 called B.L.I.N.D. (Beautiful Love Incorporated Non Profit Development). It aims to provide community-driven development for underprivileged youth through music, dance, theater, and visual arts.
